The AP Statistics exam
AP Statistics Exam Tuesday, May 11, 2027
Format
| Section | Questions | Time | Share of score |
|---|---|---|---|
| I: Multiple Choice | 42 | 90 minutes | 50% |
| II: Free Response | 4 | 90 minutes | 50% |
Both sections allow a graphing calculator with statistical capabilities, and a formula sheet and tables are provided on exam day. You can review them on the formulas and tables page.
The 4 free-response questions
- Question 1. Multi-Focus on Practices 1 and 2. A multi-part question about forming an investigative question and collecting data: sampling methods, study design, and which conclusions a design allows.
- Question 2. Multi-Focus on Practices 3 and 4. A multi-part question about analyzing data and interpreting results: building and reading displays, calculating, and explaining what the numbers mean in context.
- Question 3. Inference (Hypothesis Test or Confidence Interval). A complete significance test or confidence interval: name the procedure, check the conditions, calculate, and state the conclusion in context.
- Question 4. Multi-Focus on Practices 2, 3, and 4. A multi-part question that mixes content from across the course and asks you to collect, analyze and interpret together.
Each question is scored point by point, and each point is earned on its own. A wrong answer in one part does not cost you the points in another, so answer every part.

Free-response practice
Original practice questions written in the new format. Each part has the scoring criteria, examples of responses that earn the point and responses that do not, and a model response.
- Question 1 style · 10 pointsCarbon monoxide detector survey plansThree plans to estimate how many homes have a working carbon monoxide detector: cluster and stratified samples, bias, and an investigative question.
- Question 1 style · 10 pointsSpeed feedback signs on residential streetsDo radar speed signs slow drivers on residential streets? Identify units and variables, randomize, block on school zones, and write an investigative question.
- Question 2 style · 10 pointsPhone cases and cracked screensDoes the type of phone case go with fewer cracked screens? A two-way table with conditional proportions, probability rules, an expected count, and causation.
- Question 2 style · 10 pointsDays at the shelter for small and large dogsHow long do small and large dogs wait to be adopted? Quartiles, the 1.5 IQR rule, comparing skewed distributions, z-scores, and a change of units.
- Question 3 style · 10 pointsWarm-up routines and vertical jumpA matched pairs t-test on whether a dynamic warm-up raises vertical jump height: procedure, hypotheses, conditions, p-value, and conclusion.
- Question 3 style · 10 pointsRoad-test pass rates at two centersEstimate the gap in first-attempt road-test pass rates at two centers with a two-sample z-interval, then decide which claims the interval supports.
- Question 4 style · 10 pointsFire hydrant inspectionsAre 95% of a city's fire hydrants really working? A binomial model, why the z-test fails, a p-value from simulation, and the cost of a Type II error.
- Question 4 style · 10 pointsTree canopy and surface temperatureDo shaded city blocks run cooler in July? Interpret a regression line, r-squared and a residual, then deal with confounding and plan the test for an experiment.
Timed multiple-choice practice
A timed set of multiple-choice questions at the exam's pace, checked when you finish. Some questions come from the question bank, the rest are generated fresh each time.
