Lab

Normal Curve Explorer

A normal curve is a picture of where values tend to fall. Change the mean and the standard deviation, drag the cutoffs, and watch the shaded probability change. Then switch to guessing mode and estimate the area before the lab tells you.

Challenges

  1. Set the mean to 0 and the standard deviation to 1. What share of the area lies within one standard deviation of the mean? Within two? Within three?
  2. Double the standard deviation without moving the cutoffs. Does the shaded area between them grow or shrink? Explain why.
  3. Find the cutoff that leaves exactly 10% of the area in the right tail. What is its z-score?
  4. In guessing mode, get five estimates in a row within 0.05 of the true area.
