Set the two functions equal and solve for sec⁡x: 1+3sec⁡x=−5⇒3sec⁡x=−6⇒sec⁡x=−2 Secant is the reciprocal of cosine, so cos⁡x=−12.

Cosine is 12 at the reference angle π3. It is negative in the second and third quadrants, so on 0≤x<2π: x=π−π3=2π3andx=π+π3=4π3 That is choice C.

Check: cos⁡2π3=−12, so sec⁡2π3=−2 and f(2π3)=1+3(−2)=−5.

Each choice

  • A. These are the angles where cos⁡x=12, positive. The reference angle is right but the sign was lost, so the angles are in quadrants I and IV instead of II and III.
  • B. These are the solutions of sin⁡x=12. Two slips combine here: secant was treated as the reciprocal of sine (that is cosecant), and the negative sign was lost.
  • C (correct). Here sec⁡x=−2 means cos⁡x=−12, which happens at 2π3 and 4π3.
  • D. These solve sin⁡x=−12. The sign is right, but the reciprocal of secant is cosine, not sine.
